Sample Processing
The Genomics Core has the QIAsymphony SP instrument from Qiagen to perform automated purification of nucleic acids including genomic DNA, cell-free circulating DNA, RNA from whole blood, tissue or buccal samples for molecular biology applications. This reliably provides high-quality nucleic acids that are compatible with most common downstream assay technologies, such as real-time PCR, digital PCR, and next generation sequencing (NGS). While continuing sample traceability throughout the process with compatibility with our Progeny Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
Sample Processing
All samples are accessioned into our LIMs upon arrival and given unique barcodes
to ensure accurate tracking and handling throughout the process.
Nucleic Acid Extraction
We offer DNA extraction from fresh whole blood (collected in purple top EDTA tubes) and
RNA extraction from PaxGene tubes. RNA is processed in batches of 48 samples, PaxGene
tubes will be stored at -80C until processed. Each sample is analyzed by fluorometric assay
to confirm a minimum concentration of 20ng/uL or 2ug per aliquot.
Whole Blood Processing
Plasma, serum and buffy coats samples are processed immediately upon arrival, ideally
within one hour of blood draw, and held for quick storage in one of -80C freezers unless long
term storage is requested.
Sample Storage and Retrieval Services
We provide secure storage and retrieval services for samples used in downstream
processing within the OGI Genomics Core. Samples that were extracted by our core
continue the monitoring process by our LIMs which include their freezer locations. Freezers
are monitored 24/7, and staff are on-call to address any issues.

Sample Drop Off:
The core accepts samples Monday through Friday, from 9 AM to 4:30 PM.
- Place whole blood samples in EDTA tubes (purple top) in the marked bin in the
refrigerator in the hallway directly outside of the Genomics core in room 566A. - Notify staff if you are dropping off samples for plasma/ serum/ or buffy coat
collection. - Please fill out the sample drop-off sheet with all requested information
